Starlinger intern, 2024/01 - Issue 36
the invoice stated two cylinders, but the crate was filled with Bibles. “What are you doing with a whole crate of Bibles?” he asked me. It was just completely wrong, I don’t know what had happened. The cylinders never reappeared.” After 35 years, what is it that keeps Manuela Huber motivated? “I enjoy my job and our team works very well together. It’s often fun, with lots of different things to do. It’s stressful, but I like that. It’s also very handy being so close to home; when the children were small, it was very important to me that I could get home quickly if anything happened. And I have to say this: It was never an issue if you had to take time off or go on holiday because the children were sick. Starlinger deals with these situations in a very fair, humane way, and that’s a really positive thing.”

MANUELA HUBER AT OUR CUSTOMERS’ SERVICE FOR 35 YEARS Manuela Huber applied to Starlinger while still in her final year at the commercial academy in 1988 – and received no response. So she took a job in Vösendorf. About a year later, she finally got a reply to her application and was invited to an interview. She was offered a job in the spare parts department, which she accepted. It was a huge advantage that the company was so close to her home. Manuela Huber has remained with us to this day – 35 years have passed since 3 April 1989. She has witnessed the growth of the company and met her husband Johannes Huber, the head of our mechanical production, here during a company outing in the 1990s. She remembers the early days: “Back then, there were five of us in our group, including the boss; it was all very informal. The way work was divided up was also different – there was a separate group for orders and quotations, while another group was responsible for despatching the parts. We now process a customer’s entire spare parts order – from the quotation stage right through to dispatch.” Manuela Huber and her colleagues are in direct contact with customers and process spare parts orders that require no further clarification. Huber looks after our customers in South Africa and Nigeria and also takes care of special tasks such as shipping for trade fairs or returns and imports. In the course of the years she also had to deal with some funny situations. “There was an import shipment, some broken cylinders that were being returned,” Huber recalls. “One day the customs officer called me and explained that
